When you read to your dog, you liberate yourself from the leash that is your BlackBerry, your computer, or your television. When you read to your dog, you get a rare chance to do less and be more at the same time. You feel unplugged; you feel present—and your dog notices this. He appreciates this. How many times have you nudged him to the side while you were checking your email, or kicked him off the couch so that you could watch your favourite TV show? Too many. But, as you sit and read to your dog in the quiet of your room, you’re making up for all those moments of neglect. You’re telling your dog that he is a priority. There are no distractions; it’s simply quality bonding time. You’re providing your dog with a sense of intimacy and well-being. It calms him; it’s comforting. And it makes it easier for him to get to sleep. Not only will your relationship with your dog improve, but so will your dog’s receptive vocabulary. So, read a bedtime story to your dog. And when you’re done, tell him you love him. Make sure that before leaving the room for the night, you let him know that you love him.
